On the sidelines of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women, Jeanette was invited to speak as a panelist during the “Women Leadership in Coal Transitions” event where entry points for operationalising gender in the design and implementation of energy transitions policies and projects was discussed.
Coal transitions present significant social, economic, and political challenges, and will particularly impact women. Given the pre-existent gender disparities, women are more likely to face barriers to effective participation in transition planning and decision-making, jobs and livelihoods, access to and control over assets, access to services, migration, increased gender-based violence, and social cohesion risks, among others. In the case of coal transitions, the impacts on women are typically both more severe and less visible than those on men.
This workshop was structured as a dialogue between experts working on just energy transition policies and finance, and gender equality advocates and experts. The aim of the workshop was to advocate for a more prominent and systematic approach to addressing gender equality and women leadership in the energy transition policy making and investment project design and implementation.
Ahead of the AU Head of States Africa Climate Summit 2023 (ACS), Jeanette served as a panelist on the youth lead panel discussion "African-Led Solutions to Global Challenges", hosted by the African Youth Climate Assembly (AYCA).
As the official youth engagement mechanism for the ACS, AYCA gathered perspectives from different regions across Kenya ahead of the AYCA. These invaluable insights helped shape the Africa Youth Climate Declaration that was presented at the Summit.
The panel was broadcasted on live TV on 23 August, 2023.
